Rolex watches every successful man should own before 40
Nothing quite heralds the arrival of a man like a Rolex timepiece on the wrist.
Oyster Perpetual Rolex Deepsea
One of the world’s most extreme watches, the Deepsea was recently updated for 2018. The 44mm timepiece now houses Rolex’s latest energy-efficient Calibre 3235, and has slimmer lugs, as well as a wider bracelet. It might not garner as much press as the much more wearable – and, well, probably much more useful – 40mm, multi-time zone, Pepsi-bezel GMT-Master II, but the Deepsea demonstrates how far traditional watchmaking can be pushed, while remaining (relatively) wearable.
Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona
The Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmography Daytono is outfitted with Cerachrom bezels, which were first developed and patented by Rolex in 2005. The numbers and markers (in this case, of the tachymetric scale) are engraved on Rolex’s own ceramic material, and the bezels are heated to temperatures of up to 1,500 degrees Celsius, so as to harden and purify the material. The bezels are bombarded with platinum (or gold, depending on which model the bezel is being used for),which coats the numerals and graduations. The excess platinum is removed by diamond-polishing. The result: A virtually scratch-proof and UV-resistant watch-face frame that is handsomely legible.
Rolex GMT-Master II
Relax, Rolex isn’t simply repeating its 2014 novelty. The 2018 GMT-Master II, while having the same red and blue Cerachrom bezel, is now in steel with a Jubilee bracelet. It also has a brand new movement, the Calibre 3285, which uses the brand’s Chronergy escapement (allowing for a 15 per cent gain in efficiency),has 70 hours of power reserve and boasts 10 patents.
